What is Retell Lecture?
Retell Lecture is one of the most challenging tasks in the PTE Speaking section. You’ll listen to a short academic lecture (with an image or visual prompt) and retell it in your own words within 40 seconds. This task tests your ability to listen actively, summarize key information, and speak fluently with correct pronunciation—all under pressure.
With 3–4 lectures in this section, mastering a repeatable structure + note-taking strategy is the key to success.
- Each audio lasts 30 to 90 seconds and plays once only.
- You will have a visual prompt (image or chart) to support understanding.
- After the lecture ends, you get 10 seconds to prepare.
- Then, the microphone opens and you have 40 seconds to deliver your response.
- You must speak confidently and continuously—pausing more than 3 seconds ends the recording.
Scoring Criteria (3 categories, max 5 points each)
- Content – Includes the main topic + 2–3 key ideas + a clear conclusion. Irrelevant or missing information reduces your score.
- Oral Fluency – Measures your rhythm, phrasing, and ability to speak smoothly without hesitation.
- Pronunciation – You must be clear, accurate, and understandable to a native speaker.
Top 8 Tips to Maximize Your Retell Lecture Score
- Always include the topic — mention it in your first sentence.
- Aim for 2–3 main ideas — don’t try to say everything.
- Speak for the full 40 seconds — avoid finishing too early.
- Don’t memorize scripts — adapt your template based on the lecture.
- Use filler phrases when needed:
- “The speaker also talked about…”
- “Another important point was…”
- Speak naturally, not too fast — fluency matters more than speed.
- Avoid long pauses — if you forget something, move to the next idea.
- If you make a mistake, correct yourself quickly:
- “Sorry, what I meant was…”
